Behavior Management Policy
 A Positive Approach

Discipline of children at this school is designed to increase children's understanding, their internal controls and to aid in developing their ability to use language as a problem-solving strategy.

We view punishment as a negative behavior control, and it is expressly forbidden in any form. Corporal punishment, including spanking, is absolutely prohibited, as well as any form of cruel or severe punishment, humiliation or verbal abuse. Children are never denied food punitively. Children are never punished for soiling, wetting or not using the toilet.

Discipline and guidance is consistent and is based on developmental norms, societal expectations and responsibilities, always mindful of the individual child. In classroom management of behavior, teaching strategies are based on distraction, redirection, and, if necessary, separation from the causative situation. Removal from the classroom, however, is not permitted.

We believe that a minimum of words is effective in guiding a child's behavior in these early years for clarity of understanding. The teacher is careful not to make judgments or use judgmental words. In helping these young children to resolve any conflicts, the teacher will assist them to verbalize their feelings and needs and to devise their own solutions. She is careful not to impose her own solution.

If a child cannot respond to the strategies of distraction or redirection, it may be necessary to move into the third strategy--separation. He/she will NOT be removed from the classroom but simply separated from the group until he/she can regain control and is ready to rejoin the group situation.

We want to assure our parents that any behavior problem of a persistent or severe nature will always be brought to parental attention for a cooperative solution. We are so anxious to share in YOUR child's realization of his/her potential!

FBCNS Toileting Policy

It is not necessary for your child to be toilet trained to enroll. Toilet training is an important developmental milestone for your child and ideally is a joint venture among teacher, parents and child. We will work with you to establish a comfortable routine consistent with your child's physical and emotional abilities. We encourage you to discuss with us any concerns or issues you have,  We encourage you to tell us when you are sending a child to school in underwear for the first time, etc. so that we can best assist  your child.

It is helpful if parents have their children use a
bathroom before coming to school, due to our bathrooms being upstairs from the classrooms.  Please dress your child in clothing that they can fasten themselves, as we encourage them to be independent.

The FBCNS does not use the bathrooms at the same time as the Needham Children’s Center.  If the bathrooms are occupied when we arrive we will wait until the NCC is finished and then the FBCNS children may use the facilities.

REGULAR TOILETING PROCEDURE:
•
Children may go to the bathroom at anytime it is necessary
•    Throughout the day the staff will periodically ask the children if they need to use     the  toilet and we will encourage the use of the toilet at certain times during     the day (before going outside, before snack, etc.),
•    A teacher always accompanies the children to the bathroom.
•    A teacher also accompanies any child from outdoor playground to the bathroom.
•    Once in the bathroom the children use the facilities as needed.
•    If a child requests assistance, staff will suggest that they try on their own, but     provide assistance when needed.
•    The children will wash hands when finished using the facilities..

CHANGING PROCEDURES: Accidents do happen, particularly with our youngest children, and a teacher will assist the child in changing into the spare clothing provided in his/her backpack.. All changing is done according to the procedures set forth by the school and in compliance with EEC regulations, including the following:
•    The staff member will wear rubber gloves.
•    The child’s soiled clothes will be removed, with the help of staff if necessary.
•    All solid fecal waste will be disposed of in toilet
•    Soiled clothes will be double bagged and sent home.
•    The child will be washed with disposable wipes and dried.
•    Clean and dry clothes will be put on the child.
•    The staff member will wear a smile; no negative comments will be made to the child.
•    Both staff and child will wash hands when finished

FBCNS Outdoor Weather Temperature Policy

The FBCNS will observe the following guidelines:

•    If it is 25° or above we will have outdoor recess.

•    If the temperature is less than 25°, including the wind chill factor, we will have indoor recess.

•    If it is raining we will have indoor recess.

•    If the day begins below 25°, but the temperature rises during the day and it is warmer than 25° at 1:55 p.m. we will go outside for afternoon recess.

•    The teachers will use caution and watch the children closely for signs of being too cold.  If the children display signs of being too cold we will shorten the outdoor time.

The school is basing this policy on the attached guidelines supplied by the Iowa Department of Public Health. http://www.idph.state.ia.us/hcci/common/pdf/weatherwatch.pdf

The school requests that in cold weather you dress your children accordingly.  They need hats, gloves or mittens, boots or other warm shoes and jackets that are suitable for the temperature. (You are welcome to leave additional mittens and hats in your child’s change of clothes bag.) It is not fair to the children who have dressed appropriately to miss their outdoor time because others have not dressed for the weather.

The staff hopes this clears up our outdoor weather temperature policy and eliminates the need for early morning contact.   We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

ACCESS TO RECORDS

Parents and guardians may review child’s entire record, even if it is maintained in more than one location.  Duplications may be made upon request of the parent or guardian.  A written log must be maintained in the child’s record identifying anyone who has had access to the record or who has received any information from the record.  This log is available only to the Director and the people responsible for maintaining the center’s records.
